*Moselle, Nahe, Saar and Rhine run rings around Hunsrück!
Boasting a unique position surrounded by four romantic river valleys, the Moselle, Nahe, Saar and Rhine, this region is one of the most attractive low mountain ranges in Germany and, what is more, an expert report commissioned annually by the Federal Office for the Environment confirms that the air is of the purest quality.
A rich variety of flora and fauna testifies to an area of unspoilt nature, where it is not rare to see wild cats, badgers and kingfishers. Walkers can discover extensive orchid and daffodil meadows in the spring, and mushroom-lovers can fill their baskets to their heart’s content in the autumn.
The natural unspoilt landscape is richly varied with extensive woodland areas, meadows, river valleys and brooks, moorland and characteristic rock formations. Far away from industry and the bustle of the city, the region is a showcase for cultural treasures, such as imposing castle ruins or picturesque churches.
The Hunsrückhöhenstraße road, also called "Straße der weiten Aussicht" [far view road] traverses the highest points of the wooded mountain range. The highest elevation at 818 m is the Erbeskopf near Thalfang. It is also the highest elevation in the whole of the Rhineland-Palatinate and is one of the few places in the region which has winter sports facilities.
Movement and exercise of all kinds are an important aspect of life in the Hunsrück region, where there is an extensive network of footpaths leading to areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as the wild and romantic streams of the Ehrbach and Baybach gorges. The bicycle too is becoming increasingly popular. The Schinderhannes cycle path between Emmelshausen, Kastellaun and Simmern is a gentle cycle on even terrain enjoyed by both young and old.
