Your Way into the Valley
From the tourist information centre in the Zentrum am Park at the roundabout turn down into the Rhine-Moselle-Str. Turn left at ALDI and then right and you will find your way onto the Schinderhannes Lower Moselle cycle path. You pass the cemetery and Liesenfeld sports ground on the right through the „Scheid" woods to Gondershausen. On your left you will see the Baybach Valley and on the right, the Ehrbach Valley. These are wonderful walking areas which lead to the Moselle.
At the entrance to the town of Gondershausen you will see the emblem of the town on the roundabout, the sweeping brush. This represents the old tradition in the town, the "Gonderscher Besembenner".
Watch out: do not cycle onto the roundabout but take a left into the narrow footpath. From there you will arrive on the Hübelstraße where you turn left. Shortly after that, take a right into Gartenweg. At the end of Gartenweg you will cross over Rhine-Moselle-Straße and turn directly into Schönecker Straße on the right. You should now head towards Mermuth. A short climb must be managed up to a little forest. Once you are out of the woods you will have a great view right up to the Eifel.
In Mermuth we recommend that you visit the one and only intarsia museum in Germany (open daily from 10 to 18.00). Inlays are described as intarsia. This craft technique is several thousands of years old.
The cycle path carries on if you turn off before the little church into Buchenweg and carry straight on through the Gries Forest. The Gries man is said to be still haunting these parts today.
The people of Beulich took over a forest called Gries which had always belonged to Mermuth. After years of disputes, the two communities were finally given a trial. There was an old man living in Beulich who had survived the plague. He was known to be a trustworthy and honest person and was allowed to make the decision. The man went into his garden, sprinkled soil into his shoe and concealed twigs from Beulich trees under his hat. Dressed like this he went to the border and, to the disgust of the people of Mermuth, stopped just 100 metres in front of their town border after he had long overstepped the natural border of the steam. He held up his hand and swore with a loud voice: "The ground on which I stand and the branches above my head have always belonged to Beulich, so help me God." As a punishment, it is said that the man’s spirit is still haunting the Gries Forest today.
Passing the holiday guest house Grieshof you turn right directly behind the Gries Forest and cycle towards Beulich. In Beulich you turn right into Parkstraße and continue straight on along Ehrenburger Straße.
The journey carries on to Morshausen and it is worth seeing the Schwengelbrunnen, which you would expect to see in the Hungarian Puszta. Legend says that the fountain was pledged by a Hungarian Countess who had married at Ehrenburg. In "Backes" next to the church there is a little local museum which is dedicated to the author Jakob Kneip (Hampit der Jäger) who came from Morshausen. Visits upon arrangement: 02605 1865.
In Morshausen the cycle route runs through Brunnenstraße, Kirchstraße and Jakob-Kneip-Straße, from where you turn into Emmriger Weg.
The route then leads along the cycle path down into the serpentines of the Moselle. On the journey you will have great views over the Moselle, Baybach Valley, vineyards, the Moselle town of Burgen and Burg Bischofstein.
