In the Rhine-Moselle triangle around Emmelshausen you will find the greatest conentration of castles in Europe. Within a distance of 20 - 30 km you can experience mediaeval times and romance with all of their highlights; fortresses such as Ehrenbreitstein and Burg Rheinfels, fairytale castles such as Burg Eltz and Stolzenfels, themed castles such as Ehrenburg and Burg Maus. There is something for everyone.

This is the motto we use to work on a program for you where you can get to know the old ruins as well as the region. Experience this program on foot, by bicycle or by car.

Ehrenburg

The ancient Ehrenburg is turning over a new leaf and is unique to Germany: on all Sundays and national holidays between Easter and October there are exciting programs to join in, adventurous puzzle games and enjoyable stories for children and the rest of the family.

Burg Thurant Alken

The extensive Thurant castle was built between 1198 -1206 by Palsgrave Heinrich from the noble Welfen family. It is open every day from March to October from 9.00- 18.30.

Burg Waldeck

The Waldeck was broadly known in the 1960s thanks to international chanson and folklore festivals which were connected with names such as Degenhardt, Wader and Hüsch.

Burg Eltz

Welcome to Burg Eltz, one of the most beautiful and well maintained castles in Germany. Situated in a wonderfully romantic position and embedded in unspoilt nature, it looks like a fairytale castle which is a dream come true while being both inviting and majestic at the same time.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz

One of the strongest and most powerful fortresses in Europe after 1815 is situated directly opposite the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers on steep and craggy cliffs (118m above the Rhine): the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress at Koblenz.

Schloss Stolzenfels

Various annual concerts have been taking place at Castle Stolzenfels for years now. The inner courtyard of the castle offers unique flair for this purpose.

Weddings can be arranged in the castle’s chapel.

Marksburg Braubach

The Marksburg is the only elevated castle on the central Rhine which has never been destroyed and it is a textbook example of knightly castle! The castle can be viewed during a guided tour.

Kamp-Bornhofen Enemy Brothers


The castle buildings of Sterrenberg and Liebenstein near Bornhofenare are legendary: two brothers were enemies and were said to have fought against each other from the neighbouring castles. Burg Sterrenberg is the oldest surviving castle on the Rhine.

  

Burg Maus St. Goarshausen

The wings of eagles and falcons can be experienced close up with the backdrop of the mediaeval castle and the steep slopes of the Rhine. Detailed information is provided during the bird shows.

Burg Katz St. Goarshausen

Burg Katz, which was once known as Burg Neu-Katzenelnbogen, was built on a protruding cliff directly next to the famous Loreley cliffs. The castle generally served the purpose of protecting Burg Rheinfels and the town of St. Goarshausen on the opposite side.

Schönburg Oberwesel

The Schönburg near to Oberwesel is described as "the most beautifully romantic sanctuary on the Rhine" (Freiligrath). The exact period when it was built is not known. The once powerful knight’s hall is now used as a hotel.

 

Pfalz bei Kaub

The picturesque Pfalz, formerly known as the Pfalzgrafenstein, is situated on an island of rocks in the Rhine and is one of the strangest castle creations on earth. It was built for pure economic reasons and was only ever used as a customs house. 

 

Burg Rheinfels St. Goar

The visitors who view the present day "Rheinfels" are surprised by the extent of these ruins which range from the maze of defences and underground mine corridors, some of which can still be accessed today.

Sponheimer Burg Kastellaun

The mediaeval ruins of the Sponheimer Burg are found in the middle of the town centre of Kastellaun on steep cliffs. The citizens of Kastellaun have committed themselves to the restoration and maintenance of the castle and the old town.

Schinderhannes Tower in Simmern

Schinderhannes, the notorious bandit, was imprisoned in the Schinderhannes tower for half a year before he managed a spectacular escape.
